It doesn’t look like we have much interest, Stuart, in our view of the Forum and suggestion for a form of modernisation. As the Forum stands at the moment there are ten sub sections apart from the Sightings. The approx average number of posting on each is 4 - 5 per year. One or two of the sections all the postings are from just two members. Guess who.
The rest of the sparse postings are from only a handful of members. As for Sightings, mainly from 4 - 5 members with odd ones popping up now and again. The number of views is lamentable. We have over 450 members in one the country’s biggest counties. And yes John, the Lincolnshire prairie goes way beyond Nebraska. (Sorry, son, just my joke). But reading the the Forum you would never know as its usage speaks volumes about the popularity of the site.
My original question was, ‘is it possible to have and App/programme which would encourage members to use the Club site more easily, therefore making it more attractive to use, and sightings to be view by a much wider audience. Among our membership we have some extraordinary talent which, for whatever reason is not ‘shining brightly’ for more members to appreciate and engage with.
I will treat JT’s disingenuous replies like anybody else’s, with civility and respect, after all, their his views. We do not know each other, John, but like Chris Grimshaw I think you question my integrity,  casting me as a ‘humourless Luddite’
As for your appraisal of the phrase ‘tech savvy’    FYI.    Back in the day, my ‘occupation’ was of a Senior Safety Advisor on Automatic Firing Systems’ for ICBM’s. I later became Editor of the Magazine for a subsidiary of an International Company, from which I took it from being a mundane rag to a publication of International notice.
As for my humour, which others have described as ‘zany to cryptic’ spans Milligan to Python, Ben Elton to Peter Kay and many many more. At a guess I’d say yours, John, is Barry Humphries, although I think for your ‘alter ego’ Ben Elton’s nickname would appeal more.
In this message, John, I have mischeviously embedded a ‘cryptic clue’ for you to find. I wonder if you can find it.
I’m not the worlds best birder, John, but I like to learn and progress, as with anything I do I find a lot is learnt by interaction with like minded folk. My life’s motto, Ask, Learn, Enjoy
This reply will be my one and only. I wish you all well,  I consider this thread now closed. Let it lay.

Wishing All Members a Very Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year. Happy Birdin

PS. Forgot to mention, Favourite TV comedy  ‘One Foot in the Grave’

Hello Peter,

Enjoyed your message and have made a few notes.

You mention about two people posting in one or two sections, I expect John Walker is one and me the other but could be wrong.
The club has 712 members it says users so that makes it even worse viewing.
I didn't call you a "humourless luddite" as you say those are your words not mine.

You say we do not know each other but we do because you bought a Opticron scope off me and I gave you the tripod free on August 5th 2019 it was a Monday, I still have your mobile number in my mobile phone contacts list the number ends with 794 unless you have changed it, I wrote in my diary that we arranged for you to come to my house at 11am, I wrote your name in diary, I also wrote that you said "you read my pages on forum" and that you had come from Cleethorpes and we chatted about the forum.

I didn't realise had questioned your integrity, I apologise if that's how it came over.
In regards humour I also like Peter Kay and watched the program a few days ago, also like Spike, Monty Python, Billy Connolly to name but a few. Not into Barry Humphries aka Edna aka Sir Les. No idea what Ben Elton's nickname is he isn't my cup of tea.

When I mentioned tech savvy it was referring to a PC.

Have never done or been brainy enough to even attempt a cryptic crossword so whatever the cryptic clue is it will remain a mystery.

Regarding the App you could always contact Andrew Chick who is the webmaster.

I am a average birder and enjoy what I see be it a robin or a Golden Eagle.

I wish you well Peter and hope you have a lovely Xmas and a good new year.

Kind regards

John

A forum is an online discussion about any subject matter which we can relate to be it birds, wildlife or whatever tickles your fancy.

You and I will never agree as to the use of a forum.  I have to be very careful how I word things as I have promised to be good in future.

There is to much negativity regarding the forum, I for one like to be positive in my life that's how I get through every day.

Why would  a new member or even an old one want to join our forum with people saying its moribund and in the death throes that's all negative and we need to be the opposite.

When I come on late at night there is often some well known twitchers logged in who are probably viewing the latest news page.

I'm going to post or try to as earlier I got timed out which for a forum is a joke. And reply to Pete's post.

I'm with you on this Peter.  I have to point out that the Forum is not used by any of LBC Officials apart from Jim and the majority of the posts are chit-chat with no real substance.  I have made my position clear and will only be using this section - Bird Track provides a platform for recording birds on a national scale.

It’s been 14 days since your posting, Stuart, you have one comment/reply. Speaks volumes for the state of the site at the moment.
It’s so unfortunate but X, (for which we seem to have many times the number of contributors as we have members) seems to be the preferred channel of reporting. Many members undoubtably receive emails of the latest forum postings, but then contribute little. For whatever reason.
There are now only two or three members who report on a regular basis, but are viewed only a handful of times.
I don’t think the site is moribund, I think it’s in its death throes, it is almost devoid of life as it has ceased to perform its purpose, as now, not even the scant reports are noted for the records.
For myself, I don’t report as often as I would like due to health problems that have come with age, but I enjoy the reports of others.
My membership is up for renewal, of which I ponder if it is really worth it.
Not being a ‘tec wizard’ I wonder if it’s possible to create a ‘Bird Club App’ that is just for members instead of using a mass media platform? .. If so, would the response be better for all?
As the saying goes, “use or lose it”

My personal feelings, comments welcome

Hello Peter,

Ever since I joined the club forum about twenty-five years ago I have rarely looked at the Ringing Section, I have just looked but didn't feel the need to make a comment or a like.  I go more on views to find out how many people have taken the trouble to view any of my posts or someone else's, sometimes have wondered why have bothered and this has been going on for years. Another section I rarely look at is the Bat one because am too interested.  Most of all the other sections I do look at and either post or make a comment.

It's not compulsory to look at any post or like them or make a comment. As have said before I have a Twitter aka X account but don't use it.

On average over the years I usually get about a dozen views for my posts which is pathetic, the only time I get a lot is if I get controversial. Alan has recently left due to nothing happening as he said himself, one thing he said and I totally agree with him, is the amount of members who have been on the Scotland trip and none posted on the forum, it was left for the members to read about it in the enewsletter. There would be no way I would not put a comprehensive report on the forum if I had been to Scotland, Wales etc  but I suppose that is the writer in me doing a service to my fellow members.

I also have numerous health problems which limit my trips out to my patch, and that's one of the reasons I started putting My Garden reports on years ago.  My membership is due end of month and it WILL be renewed!! Why wouldn't I there is more to the club than the forum of which I really enjoy being a part of despite my way of carrying on which am hoping to change as I am getting to old to get into rows with members even though it is most likely of my own doing.

I learnt myself how to be tech savvy on a computer and mend it if needed.

Looking forward to 2025 and hoping we keep plodding on.
