Wonder if that's what has decimated my dahlia leaves this year?  Last year nothing attacked them.  I wondered if earwigs had eaten them. Or slugs. I also won't be spraying them. Got lovely flowers and they not been eaten.

Thanks John. I have no intention of blasting them with bug spray, although I'm disappointed at having lost a couple of my favourite flowers from my small cottage garden-style border.

almost certain it will be moth caterpillars , the holes in the leaves are where the laid eggs hatched and the new caterpillars
began feeding then moved up to the buds,

A lupin in my raised border (Cleethorpes) recently produced a strong flower stem with a healthy-looking head of 'buds'. A few mornings ago, I found that half of them had been nibbled away, from the bottom upwards. A day later, the rest had been eaten, leaving just the very tip. There are no 'snail trails' up the stem, so I am thinking caterpillar, and probably a large one or a gang of 'em!
The leaves are absolutely riddled with holes, leaving just a skeleton.
A couple of months ago, a delphinium suffered similar damage to its leaves and flower spike. Any suggestions as to the culprit(s)?
