Have seen V inanis in Swinn wood on meadow area ( hornets occur there)

A good day in the garden yesterday for flies: Tachina Grossa, look that up on the internet! and Volucella Inanis again, very similar to Hornet Hover-fly.

Found it in our book (Complete British Insects, Michael Chinery) and we first had one on 29 .07.2017 and a couple of times since. You're right, it is a distinctive hover-fly and easy to identify. We've also had v. inanis which again is shown in the book (published 2005) as only on the South coast, so things are moving northwards at quite a rate.

Volucella zonaria, it a large Hoverfly, ( uks largest) that loosely mimics hornet .
I have only seen it on my purple flowering buddliea .
