the purple emperors are usually seen flighting around tall sallows and the W L hairstreaks near elm (but can be nectaring high on Ash)
brown hairstreaks should be on wing near blackthorn in August and can be seen low down taking flower nectar
(the tree species are their egg laying / food plants)
regards John

Thanks for the heads up John. Went today and saw our first U.K. silver washed Frits (10) , 4 purple hairsteaks and 2 white admirals, plus a brimstone and about 4 commas. Plus hundreds of the usuals.

I visited Bardney Forest yesterday, looking at Butterflies despite not being particularly knowledgeable. I saw; White Admiral c5, Red Admiral 3, Ringlet c30, Meadow Brown 100+, Silver Washed Fritillary c5, Purple Hairstreak c5, Gatekeeper 1, Small Copper 1 and I think they were 3 Small Skipper!? Where is the best place to see Purple Emperor and White-letter Hairstreak?
Also had a close, and productive photographic encounter, with 3 incredibly confiding Wood Mice!
