I have real trouble understanding what drives people to commit acts of vandalism against structures such as bird hides. In the past year or two, two hides have been lost on the stretch of the Humber where I watch birds; the hide at LWT Dawson City reserve was burnt down & one of the hides at LWT Barrow Haven Reedbed was made unsafe by vandals and had to be demolished. I fear for the future of the new hide at NE Lincs Council Cress Marsh Wetland, Stallingborough!
As you say, birdwatching is a peaceful past time, so really can't comprehend why they do it.

Jon

That is tragic, we have seen some great birds from that hide. Watching birds is such a quiet, harmless pastime and we have to put up with mindless vandalism.

Manby Wetlands is owned by a local farmer who has created a great nature reserve. As many of you will know he has erected a very useful hide enjoyed by not only birders but also local people and school outings. Over the years the hide has suffered much damage and abuse by a few mindless people which has culminated over the Christmas period in more damage and has resulted in the owner losing his patience and in frustration he has now removed the hide entirely! This will upset many people. If any member has any information or ideas as to finding out who the culprits are please let me know. I have contacted the local parish mmagazine which has agreed to publish something the in the spring issue. Best wishes for the new year. Roger
