Several flocks of 100+ golden plover circling for 20 minutes over Tetney Outfall Sluice at 10.30am today. They don’t fly so close together as starlings, nor are they as acrobatic, but it was still an impressive spectacle against the backdrop of a blue sky.
Finally, they settled in a ploughed field - well over 1,000 birds, a few in the vestiges of breeding plumage. Some scuttled about, but most were motionless in that strange way they have (it’s almost an identification characteristic for the species).
I moved on after a herd of cattle surrounded me. They seemed friendly enough, but you never can tell with cattle. It only takes one to be a bit grumpy . . .
The morning was spoiled when I reached Humberston Fitties along the seabank to discover hedgerow clearance operations in full swing
( see General News).
