I wonder if there is any breeding/mate selection advantage in early summer plumage?

Re the purple sandpipers, I checked the whale's tail and breakwaters at high tide, but no luck - only turnstones.

However, I heard word that one was present last Saturday

Breeding plumage bh gull was created by Jim Wright
Puzzle of avian science - black-headed gull in breeding plumage (almost)  in mid-December - this bird at Humberston Fitties pool this morning.
