How long do birds live?

A question birders are regularly asked.  I was very surprised when Martin Sizer (Mid Lincs Ringing Group) informed me that he had re-trapped a Great Tit at Kenwick Park Golf Club.  Nothing unusual in that except it was ringed on December 3rd. 2013, over 9 years ago!! The longevity record for the species is 10 years and 5 months - not long to go!  A good bit of ammunition to answer the anti-ringing brigade who think that putting a ring on on a bird hinders its chances of survival!
