This is great news Jim! I must admit that I was quite pessimistic regarding it, and really did fear the dreaded flu. A good ending and a positive result.Word from Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue tonight is that the bird has responded "brilliantly" to care, and, after a final few health checks, should be ready for release soon. The proposed release location has not been decided, but, according to CWR, it may be in Scotland.

Again, thanks for this info Phil. It is reassuring to know that they are aware and considering with each rescue that we have a situation that requires monitoring. I am pleased the Puffin is otherwise healthy apart from its crash landing, and hope it will make a full recovery and be returned to its natural environment.

They've just sent me this chart from DEFRA - red is the major concerns, purple are possibilities, but less likely to be avian flu

CWR say they have sent a few birds off for testing this year - all came back negative - and they point out that in each case a bird has to be euthanised first. They are in contact with DEFRA and testing company ALPHA all the time. The puffin was otherwise healthy and displayed no symptoms of flu to either them or the vet, and so it was not sent for testing. It had contusions to the left wing which will heal. Hope this reassures.

I take your important point Nick. I've just messaged them asking if it was tested and will let you know. Cheers.
