The Ships' Names and Badges Committee decide what ship names should be.

Thanks Stuart - I should have done the Googling myself.
Among those I came across (historically) were the following
HMS:
Cormorant
Curlew
Bittern
Redwing
Guillemot
Puffin
Shearwater
Mallard
Sparrowhawk
Starling
Linnet
Osprey
etc etc.
However, of the 74 currently commisioned in the Royal Navy, the only one is HMS Magpie - a survey motor launch.
I couldn't discover who makes the naming choice.

On the subject of wrynecks, the Royal Navy’s fleet once included a destroyer, HMS Wryneck, which was sunk by dive bombers in the Mediterranean in 1941. Does anyone know who chose the name and why? Have any other Royal Navy ships been named after birds?

I went to have a look yesterday (and about 20 others) but it failed to materialise. It was bitterly cold and windy, and after an hour I gave up. Some of the other birders seemed to think it may have used the Southerly wind to move on. You were very lucky to have seen it Jim.

I think you've cracked it, John. I have attached a cropped pic of my masterpiece.
