Hi John, we first identified one of these handsome hover-fles in our garden in 2017 and have seen them most  years since.  Altogether we have identified 12 different species of hover flies and similar. Wether it's better observation on our part or more common due to warming, it's difficult to say.

A fine Volucella zonaria a large hornet mimic hoverfly on my buddliea on 020822 was an unusual sighting.
