Sadly its another tree disease  this affecting several species of oak , mostly mature  trees ,  signs of disease are dark weeps on main trunk
Its widespread in Europe and UK.

Interesting comment about acorn failure in Europe, John.
I have two Oaks on my patch in Cleethorpes with no acorns on at all this year. Also conker tree with nothing whatsoever on. 
All these were loaded last year as I collected a few of each for planting purposes.
Apart from unsuitable spring weather conditions it’s a bit mystifying.
Interested in any explanations as the resident Jay hasn’t been spotted yet either.

There has been a failure of acorns in several areas of Europe
At least 23 jays seen passing over S T nnr over past 2 weeks with peak counts
12seen over south on 041021 and 5 on 051021
