Another diagnostic with a spotred is the end of the bill droops a tad but it's noticeable.

Common Redshank, shorter bill with red base.
Spotted longer, thinner bill and only red on lower bill.

Distinction between common/spotted redshank in transitional/juvenile plumage is probably a doddle . . . when you've got the knack.

I definitely haven't got the knack.

Which species is this (seen today at Tetney outtfall sluice) ? And why? What are the definitive plumage features?

I didn't see the bird in flight. Nor did I hear it call.

This is a serious gap in my knowledge so I'd be grateful for any pointers from wader experts.
