If it hadn't been for the difference in bill size, I might have sought to implicate the lake's long-staying pale-form barnacle goose.

The strange-looking duck was not present this afternoon - perhaps it swaps freshwater with saltwater and was out on the estuary.

Elsewhere on the lake, there were 10 pochard (eight drakes) - my highest count of the winter for a species which seems to be declining in many parts of Lincolnshire and beyond.

The boating lake seems to be something of a stronghold habitat in Lincolnshire.

Anyone able to identify this newcomer at Cleethorpes Boating Lake, please? I couldn't find it in my trusty Observer Book of Birds (five bob well spent). My guess is mallard x eider hybrid, but I could well be wrong.
