Hi Mike. Happy New Year!
Following a conference on sustainable agriculture that i attended at the University college of Dublin some years ago I was asked to develop a range of herbal leys for Limagrain - the company i work for. These were introduced into our Sinclair McGill brand and have produced some good results on farm.
I am very interested to know the composition of your Herbal ley and why it is attracting the Snipe. Also I would be keen to hear if it is effectively reducing your blackgrass population and any pros and cons you have experienced growing herbal leys. My email address at work is ian.misselbrook@limagrain.co.uk.
Kind regards,
Ian

Today I pulled into the gateway on a neighbouring farm whilst trimming roadside hedges and Snipe immediately started to flush. The field in question has been seeded down to a Herbal Ley for the past couple of years as a means to reduce it’s ‘Blackgrass’ population. The field is surrounded by arable land but has obviously been waterlogged for the last couple of months. I walked into the field and Snipe continued to flush. I made an estimate of c75 individuals but consider that conservative and if I had systematically covered the whole 28 acres the total could well have been in excess of 100!
