Hello Jane.
Although they are getting more commonly seen in Lincolnshire, Great White Egrets are still very rare birds at Whisby Nature Reserve. In fact we haven't had a record so far this year.
As luck would have it my office overlooks Thorpe Lake and all I have seen today is up to 3-4 Little Egrets. They are usually on the islands in front of the visitor centre but they also get into the trees to roost and preen. It is possible that I have missed these birds. Did you by chance happen to get any photographs?
Cheers

It is highly possible as they become more and more common around the locality For my first over twenty years ago I had to drive to deepest darkest Norfolk. Now we see them regularly. There were at least three (possibly five) on Boultham Mere earlier this year or late last. Idle Valley NR in Notts keeps getting good numbers. Nice sighting

I have seen little egrets there too - several there today in fact, as well as the great white egrets, which were substantially larger. They were on the opposite shore of Thorpe lake, perched quite still in the vegetation.

I have seen great white egret at Whisby (one I think) but little egrets are fairly common there nowadays.Great White is much bigger and has a yellow bill. Little Egret has yellow feet and a black bill

Thought I saw 2 great white egrets at Whisby today, but am unsure because they weren't on the sightings board. Do they frequent these parts?
