Yes it's very nice to see so many painted ladies about. Could this year compare with 2009 I wonder? That's the last time I can remember them being remotely plentiful, and that was a real bumper year. Nowadays you can expect to see little other than bees on your buddleia bush, but in 2009 mine was throbbing with painted ladies!

Cleethorpes foreshore nature reserve was predictably quiet this afternoon. A few housemartins and swallows were moving south. Out on the saltmarsh, skylarks were conspicuous as were linnets, starlings and a few meadow pipits and starlings. Didn’t see any waders, raptors or terns.

Away from the birds, painted lady butterflies were plentiful, and the display of orchids is very impressive.
