RUTH Tingay who monitors unlawful killing of Hen Harriers and other raptors on gamebird estates has posted an interesting map on her website.
It shows how an individual satellite-tagged Golden Eagle steers clear of windfarms in the Monadhliath mountain range on the western edge of the Cairngorms National Park and near where the Lincolnshire Bird Club trip is headed for five days in January.
There are two ways of interpreting what is revealed. On the plus side, it seems to indicate that eagles avoid windfarms (arrowed in blue). On the minus side, these areas may, at least in the past, have been prime foraging sites.
Ruth's post comes in the wake of a 'rare' incident in which an eagle was killed in a collision with a turbine on a windfarm in Galloway.
On LBC's previous two Cairngorms trips, we have missed out on seeing Golden Eagles, so fingers crossed it will be third time lucky - perhaps a bird soaring over the Monadhliath range .
There may still be some spaces on the January trip, and bookings can be made via Cairngorm Travel (tel: 01405 761334).
