Agreed, Pete, it is a terrific book, but not an entirely joyous one.

She's remarkably confiding about her mother's erratic health. 

I hope she's on the mend, and everything works out well. Perhaps there should be a sequel.

As for the author's claim that it is an unwritten rule that birders should share their sightings, I'm not sure that this is a rule that  is universally followed.

Just read Jims review of Bird Girl now released in paperback. I read it when it first came out and it's one of the best books I've read
