This superb study of swifts was one of the star lots at an auction in Leyburn in North Yorkshire on Saturday.

The hammer came down at £1,200 - double the £600 highest pre-sale estimate.

The artist? Raymond Booth (1929-2015) of Leeds.

Whoever the buyer is, I certainly don’t think he/she has overpaid.
