An audience of about 31 was at Whisby on Saturday afternoon to hear LBC chairman Phil Espin's talk - Departed Glory: The Great Bustard and Other Lost Birds of Lincolnshire.

Phil explored  what limited records there of the GB in Lincolnshire and discussed the encouraging project to restore the species on Salisbury Plain, using birds first from Russia, then from Spain.

Ultimately, there are hopes that it may be possible to introduce birds to Sussex, the Norfolk-Suffolk border, the Lincolnshire Wolds and the Yorkshire Wolds, but it could be 20 or more years for this to happen - and it would need immense goodwill from farmers, conservation groups and others.

In the meantime, there may be better prospects of coaxing stone curlews back to our county as a breeding species (as happened with cranes), but the conditions will have to be right..
