This forlorn-looking bird failed to meet its target price of £80-120 when it went under the hammer at a pre-Christmas sale held by Tennants of Leyburn in North Yorkshire.

The price had only reached £70 when the hammer came down.

It is catalogued as a spotted sandgrouse, but can anyone verify this? Or might it be Pallas's

A label on the glass display case states: "Sand Grouse, shot by my father on Woodends Farm, Woodlesford in the 1880's, (Top of John o Gaunts Hill out of Leeds), W.W. Siseons."

Of historical interest but shockingly creepy by today's standards - funny lot, the Victorians!
