You're right, Pete. Let's have a few more concrete tanks (and Rutland waters as well).

I caught up with the two velvet scoters at 3.45pm today. Light was fading fast but luckily they were very close to the water sports building. In 20 or so minutes there, I also happened on a drake goosander, a goldeneye and a dozen gadwall.

I agree, Pete. Not particularly scenic but Covenham has certainly delivered the goods over the years. And, as you say, the birds are often conspicuous (all the more so with a 'scope).

Perhaps a few more 'concrete tanks' wouldn't come amiss.

But was it really necessary to remind me of that Wryneck?!

There is a lot to be said about Covenhams concrete tank. The birds there are easy to find and usually show well. But maybe not your Wryneck Jim!

At the AGM of Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust yesterday, chief executive Paul Learoyd confirmed that it was a consultee on Anglian Water’s proposal.

The LWT is keen for the project, if it goes ahead, to be more like Rutland Water than ‘concrete tank’ Covenham Reservoir.

Anglian Water's proposed new reservoir near Sleaford could generate some promising birding opportunities if it goes ahead. Could it even provide a habitat for nesting ospreys?
