Lincolnshire 'dotterel' was not what it seemed.

A couple travelled all the way from their home in Buckinghamshire to Lincolnshire to witness a 'dotterel' only to discover that it was . . . a clod of earth!

That's one of the hazards of birding, but far from the worst experienced by Rick Simpson and wife Elis.

On another occasion, they flew to Australia for a dream shorebird-watching holiday, then promptly mislaid their rucksack containing two pairs of binoculars and a scope!

These are just two of the numerous mishaps that have befallen the Simpsons on their birding travels.

They are recounted (in exquisitely painful detail) in the couple's new book, A Quest for Waders, which was reviewed in the January edition of the club's newsletter, The Heron.

The publication price is £15, plus postage, but, until the end of February, the Simpsons are offering a 10 per discount to LBC members - in other words, £13.50 (plus £3.50 p&p).
