Please find attached a brief summary the 2017 Bittern breeding season from Simon Wotton (per RSPB Centre for Conservation Science).
This summary is for general distribution, so feel free to pass it on.
A minimum of 166 booming males were recorded in 2017, another slight annual increase, from 162 boomers in 2016.
69 confirmed or probable nests were recorded on 35 sites in 2017, slightly up on the 65 nests in 2016.
Note that not all sites are now monitored for nesting activity.
