I am staying in Italy at the moment near Arezzo. Sadly have to come home Thursday. The sound of turtle doves purring has been one of the highlights of the holiday. Have heard them every day and seen them most days here.
Regards,
Patrick

Sattelite tagging in Europe shows the majority move over southern Italy and Malta into Africa
A small percentage move through south Iberia  and cross into Africa

Do our birds migrate  via Malta? I thought they might have a more westerly route. Does anyone know the breeding status of TDs in France, the Low Countries and other parts of continental Europe?

That bird has been holding a territory towards Brickyard access Peter probably the only one on nnr know
many turtle doves used to be shot in spring and autumn in Malta a vital migration route stop over , probably still are?
The hawthorns on the nnr are larger and more numerous than 45 years ago , TDs seem to prefer them for nesting

A sad state of affairs. The habitat at STNNR has not changed since the 1970's, so some other factor must must be affecting the population. Wether that is hunting in France or changing conditions in their wintering quarters we don't know. One was seen flying over by birders looking for the Thrush Nightingale on 09.05.24.
