Expedition with RAFOS to conduct Webs single core counts brought a few lifers and some great year ticks. Highlights from John O' Groats to Cape Wrath were:
Many Great Northern, Black Throated and Red Throated Divers in sheltered bays and sea lochs.
21 Slavonian Grebes on one Loch!
Many Red-breasted Mergansers
Rock Dove (proper!)
Couple of Bramblings
Black Gulliemots
Hooded Crows
Golden Eagle
6 Hen Harriers

Dipped on a few though - Little Bunting, Crested Tit, White-tailed Eagle, Capercallie, Crossbill and Grouse. The team I was on (there were 3 teams in total covering North and West Scotland) were tasked with the North coast so unless we "bumped" into them, my area was void.

Will blog my exploits once organised - even dug out vehicles stuck on a hill (one was a Police van!!)

Cheers

Sounds great John!,brings back great memories of my last visit up there in 1995 to twitch the Grey-tailed Tattler at Burghead,we also managed drake King Eider at Lossiemouth and a drake Surf Scoter at Findhorn Bay!.But it is the more common species like rafts of Long-tailed Duck,Velvet Scoter etc that stick in my mind an amazing spectacle.Look forward to reading the Blog.

Regards

Steve.

Cheers Steve,

Found my own Ring-necked Duck too. Blog will follow, however I have 122 tetrads worth of roving records data to enter yet - just started 2 Feb 10 sheets!!!!!

Found it quite void of Scoter, but Long-tailed Duck and Gannets were nice. Also found a Shag, Barnacle Goose and Greylag Goose with darviks but failed to read them.

Speak soon

I saw a Golden Eagle up there when I was on holiday in northern Scotland back in 2007... spine tingled with awe! :D
