Whooper Swan (1st winter bird)

All of the adult Whooper Swans left the New Holland swan flock in early March but the lone first winter bird is still around as of 23rd. It may well stay and summer with the immature Mutes as two did in 1998. Note in these photos that it is quite advanced in its appearance now looking much more like an adult bird. The bill colour has changed to pale yellow with the exception of the underside which is still pink (see last picture). It is almost possible to see the red orbital ring in the two head shots below. Note also the disadvantages of trying to preen with a foot covered in Humber mud! The bird is ringed on the right leg with a metal BTO type ring but as it is usually swimming or stood in sloppy mud I have not been able to read the inscription.
