White-throated Sparrow that was present in Willingham Woods

The images below show the White-throated Sparrow that was present in Willingham Woods from December 5th 1992 to March 28th 1993. Being a very rare bird in a mid-winter period and an exceptionally long stayer it attracted huge numbers of admirers with many people visiting on more than one occasion. Thanks were due to Stuart Britton and the local ringing group who initially trapped the bird and then arranged access for the throngs of birders.

The first image shows the bird as it perched in a low alder soon after its initial release on December 5th. The remainder were taken on a very frosty day in January 1993. The bird is shown perched in the hawthorn and blackthorn hedge it favoured and under the hedge where it fed on food provided by the ringers. It was also seen performing its typical two footed scratching behaviour in the hedge detritus especially later in the spring when it fed more on natural foods.
