Siskin invasion?

Siskins have been much in evidence around Barton pits over the last three weeks (Feb 2002). Up to 60 birds are present although more may well be scattered around the abundant alders which are spread around the pits. The birds have been feeding almost exclusively in alders throughout and of recent days the males have been singing constantly. In their spring dress they make a fantastic sight and are well worth prolonged scrutiny. Has there been an invasion in other parts of the county? are numbers elsewhere exceptional? Interestingly my garden feeders, which include red peanut feeders, have failed to attract the species although flocks regularly fly over. Have they abandoned peanuts?
