Birds in Lincolnshire

Sanderling (Calidris alba)

These photographs show a Sanderling in spring plumage, rather than the commoner winter plumage observed on the Lincolnshire coast between October and March. Note the shorter and straighter bill than a Dunlin and the rusty brown colour of the upper/lower scapulars. In flight Sanderling show a distinct white wing bar, but their clockwork action along the tide line is probably their best identification feature.

In Lincolnshire Sanderling are found on sandy beaches between Oct-Mar and on passage between Apr-Jun with adults returning Jul-Sept and juvs returning Sep-Oct, during passage birds can turn up inland at suitable locations such as Toft Newton.
