MEDITERRANEAN GULLS AT CHAPEL POINT. Feb 2002

There are the two Mediterranean Gulls which are frequenting the outfall area on the beach at Chapel Point, Feb 2002. They appear to be using the area mainly for bathing and resting, and on the day these photo were taken - February-11th 2002 they were present in the early afternoon for about an hour before flying off together inland with Black-headed Gulls.
They are both adults (see pictures below) and interestingly they have strikingly different head patterns. One is still in its non-breeding plumage and showing the dark ear-covert smudge and the other has almost completed its head moult into full adult breeding plumage. The moult of head and body feathers of adult and third-summer Mediterranean Gulls into breeding plumage takes place from January to April.
