Caspian Gull - Bagmoor near Winterton today 24/12/01 by Garry Taylor.

This bird spent long periods on the nearby tip and has only been seen three times since it was found on 14/12/01. The shots aren't of the highest quality but most features can be seen, the bird also shows a good clear cut rump and almost entirely white underwings.

Two different first-winter Caspian Gulls were seen at Bagmoor 20th January 2002.

Caspian Gull

A second winter Caspian Gull at Winterton tip on the 29th January 2002, which appears to be the first of this age to be photographed and identified in the county so far? Apparently a third winter bird was also identified in the Lincoln area at the weekend.

Adult Caspian Gull ?

The photos attached below, show an adult gull photographed at Bagmoor on March 2nd 2002. In our opinion the bird appears to be an adult Caspian Gull but we would welcome any other opinions on the bird. As usual the gull was not close and the photos are digi-scopes from about 150-200m range. In the photos it is possible to see the general jizz of the bird with a smallish head, sloping forecrown, fairly long? parrellel sided bill, lacking an obvious gonydeal angle and being dull yellow in colour. The eye looks dark and small in the shots but the quality of the photos is not brilliant. In the field the eye was a dark brown colour and appeared to lack any obvious orbital ring, contra the adult Herrings nearby, at the range observed. The long primary projection is clear. On the shots of the bird facing left there is an obvious white primary with a clear black band across it, just beyond the tertial tips. It is not possible to say which primary this is however? The bird was seen on the water for about 10 minutes before being flushed by a micro-light. In flight views were fairly brief but it showed a broken black wing tip with white inner webs breaking the restricted pattern of black. The underwings appeared to be very clean and white even under the primaries.
Interestingly there was an obvious passage of Lesser Black-backed Gulls over the weekend with adults moving north over the sea off Donna Nook and Huttoft and a reported large increase at Kirkby pits from 10-15 birds to 40+ (David Jenkins).
