North Sea fishing Band

Fishing fleets will this month be banned from fishing for sandeels in the North Sea, to save depleted sandeel stocks. But the decision by Brussels to close the sandeel fishery for the rest of 2005 could be too late for this year's seabirds, which suffered their worst breeding season on record in 2004.

Many seabirds feed on sandeels - a small fish - and sandeel declines, due largely to climate change, were blamed for last year's breeding disaster.

This year, seabirds are breeding late, reducing their chances of rearing chicks successfully, while some are not nesting at all.

Springtime Birdwatch
at RSPB Freiston Shore nature reserve.
Birds will be singing from the tops of the trees and waterbirds on the lagoon will be pairing up to nest. The walk will be particularly impressive, as it is scheduled to coincide with the high tide, which means many thousands of birds will be pushed inland off The Wash and closer for us to see!

After the walk there is the opportunity to treat yourself, by having a cooked breakfast at 'The Plummers Place' Guest House, adjacent to the reserve, at 9.30 am. Go on-spoil yourself!

WHERE?

At RSPB Freiston Shore nature reserve, meeting in the car park. The reserve is easy to get to, being signposted from the A52 and only 4 miles north east of Boston.

WHEN?

On Wednesday 27 April 2005 starting at 07 30 am. Please book in advance by phoning 01205 724678 or e-mail freistonshore@rspb.org.uk - also please state whether breakfast (£5 each) is required. The cost of the event itself is £3 per adult and £1 per child (50% discount for RSPB members).

Sea Bird Wreck?

At the moment it looks like we might be seeing the start of another seabird wreck along the Norfolk coast. It would be interesting to see if this is also occuring further north. So, it would be great if people could report back on what they find over the weekend - numbers, species etc... We are very keen to receive details of any ringed birds, so have a look at as many bodies as possible for rings!

These can then be reported via the BTO website at www.bto.org and clicking on the "Report a ringed bird" link on the right-hand side. This will give us an idea of where these dead and dying birds are coming from. We've already received details of a Dutch-ringed bird, so you never know what you might find!
