Birds in Lincolnshire Possible Birds New to Lincolnshire Part 3 |

Near-Misses. by Mike Tarrant Great Black-headed Gull might not seem such a long shot to have on the Lincolnshire list. A sequence of records has emanated from northern Germany in the Baltic Sea, so a westwards displacement could see one turn up on one of our remoter beaches. How often are the sand-spits and tidal flows 'scoped at Grainthorpe or Horsehoe Point for example? A bait-digger is more likely to see one! In the seventies, a putative Siberian Rubythroat at Donna Nook was rejected by the BBRC and is the only sniff that we have had of this highly-valued species. It is always elusive, even where it is relatively plentiful in the Eastern Palearctic and the ruby throat can be surprisingly difficult to see. A female would be more difficult to identify, but the black lores should be diagnostic. Although the Spanish Sparrow is a short-distance migrant, it has turned up in Britain on a number of occasions and not just on the south coast but as far north as Orkney. Finding a male in a flock of House Sparrows would not be problematic but a female may be more easily overlooked. My fourth prediction in this group has turned up at Spurn - the Cliff Swallow. As with several other species, reports of birds from there flying out over the Humber towards Lincolnshire, have rarely been found on this side. Hirundines and swifts, being so mobile, means that any species seen in British airspace could be seen over Lincolnshire. But why have Cliff Swallows, Pallid Swifts, Chimney Swifts and White-throated Needletail Swifts so far passed us by? Return to Beginning of Article. Return to LBC Homepage. Part 4.
