Review of the Lincs Status

There have been just 12 accepted records of Ferruginous Duck involving 14 birds all of those having been sexed have been males apart from a female shot at Baston pits on November 21st 1959. The species is a true rarity with most of the records being historical and with just four birds having been reliably recorded in the last 25 years. There have been a number of Ferruginous type hybrids seen in the last 15 years and a few claims that have not been supported by documentation. All records are listed below:

Newsham Lake Brocklesby 1-2 birds February 3-24th 1929
Holywell Lake male December 25-27th 1957
Baston pits female shot November 21st 1959
Goxhill Marsh 1-2 September 4-26th 1960
Wisbech Sewage Farm male July 22-August 10th 1972
Boston male March 16-24th 1974
Covenham Reservoir male November 4-5th 1974
Chapel Pit male July 11th 1976
Chapel Pit male January 24-30th 1980
North/South Killingholme male March 5-6th 1981
Kirkby Pits male October 1998
